I remember just throwing all these "random" things together in a sales letter. It didn't even make sense at first. Until I woke up and began to really think about it.

The "dream" sales letter started out as 3 different versions, and I tested them head-to-head. You know, let them compete with each other to see which one came out on top.

But that's not all: On each version of the letter, I was testing even further...many variables at once — just all kinds of things — with 5 different headlines, 3 different leads, different layouts, graphics, videos, audio, and other cool sales devices that I didn't even know existed. All being rotated randomly and served up to my visitors.

And...it learned.

My website, I mean. It started optimizing itself, according to what kinds of things were making the biggest difference in sales. I didn't have to touch a freaking thing. This all happened automatically.

It Was Like Evolution On Steroids!

And when it was all said and done, what was left over was never in a million years what I imagined would be still standing.

The "off-the-wall" videos, the dazzling "Interactive Johnson Boxes", the dynamically-generated sales page. Jeez, this wasn't a sales letter...it was a circus sideshow!

My colleagues were laughing at my use of color, my layout, the animated headline and other oddball devices.

But...it was selling. Lord, it was selling.

I just realized my sales had tripled virtually overnight.

But this was crazy talk. Surely something like this could never happen in real life.

And...I had amassed a TON of copywriting and marketing tools, resources, swipes of BILLION-dollar salesletters from legendary copywriters, video and audio editing tools, courses, books, software.

But there it was, and now I had to make sense of it all. Which wasn't so easy, since a lot of things that I thought were "time-tested and proven" turned out to be duds. Now I don't want you to think I used flashing GIFs and banners circa 1995 or anything like that. In fact, I had access to a rich collection of the most successful sales letters ever.

I'm talking sales letters written by the greatest copywriters and marketers who ever lived: Gary Bencivenga, Joe Sugarman, David Ogilvy, Gary Halbert, John Carlton, John Caples, Jay Abraham. Quite literally just about any copywriter you could name. And I "borrowed" heavily from some of those sales letters to crank up my conversions big time.

You're probably familiar with the term "swiping", when someone takes a tested, proven ad and legally "swipes" it for their own products and services.

Why would they do that? Because it eliminates the tiresome hours of drudgery and frustration in trying to create winning ads. And at the same time, it slashes the expense, wasted time, and uncertainty of trying to "randomly stumble" on success.

What I did was just blend these successful salesletters with a few "untraditional" Web 2.0 devices to really hit a home run.

And my header graphic actually depressed my results. You've probably heard that too. In this case it was true. However, adding some images near the top actually boosted my conversion. I'm talking about pictures within the body copy itself.

Now before I show you why your answer is important, let me tell you about another tool I tested that boosted response in my tests.

Perhaps you've heard of "tear sheets." If not, in direct mail a tear sheet is an advertorial-type "article" that looks like someone tore it out of a magazine or newspaper. You can see an example of one I generated with a little-known tool on the web to the right. That took me about 5 minutes to make.

This tool is slick. It'll let you choose a headline, the name of a newspaper, and your content, of course which you'll use to promote your product. Images like this that help advance the sale are very powerful when used to their full potential.

Think about it! When an "article" about your product is "torn out" and pasted alongside your sales copy, it's a very potent (but subtle) selling device indeed!

And if you're like me, sometimes you just have brain fart after brain fart when it comes to thinking up a convincing headline. Or perhaps you throw yourself at a sales letter, writing away for days just pouring sweat and blood into it, only to have dumb things like useless cliches or unconvincing drivel clog up your masterpiece.

Maybe you have trouble getting your web pages to look right. You know, when you copy and paste your sales copy from Microsoft Word, you get all those garbage tags Word likes to throw in there. Maybe you need a good WYSIWYG web editor — one that will axe those Word tags for good.

What about video and audio? Want to use them to sell? (I mean the right way). On one site I tested, the version with video outpulled the no-video one by nearly 2 to 1!

How's that, you ask? Well, the purpose of a headline is to do one thing only: to get your sales letter read. That's it. It's not meant to try to sell them at that point, but to get them to start reading so your sales copy can do the job of selling. If they start interacting with your site, then obviously your headline accomplished its goal.

What happens when your visitor doesn't choose an option? Well, you can include your default content as well that shows up before they click on a choice (kind of like the message you would have written there if you didn't have the tool).

On this page I let you go back and change the option you chose, but you can lock them into their first choice if you want. That way, if they go back and change their selection, the message doesn't change again... it only changes on the first selection. (But they won't know that—in fact, they won't know it changes at all—because of the stealth approach you'll take... by altering the sales letter dynamically below the fold, where they can't see it!)
